International freelance payments, sized for one person
Solo freelancers carry the same cross-border risk as an agency with none of the leverage. The structure has to do the work.
A freelancer's version of this problem is distinctive. Engagements are shorter, deposits are common, the client is often larger, and there is rarely anyone to escalate to. Chasing a late payment costs billable hours you cannot recover.
The remedy is not a stronger contract you cannot afford to enforce. It is milestones small enough that no single stall is existential, with conditions specific enough that completion is not a matter of opinion.
Structure a short engagement
Even a two-week project supports three milestones: a first artefact, the main delivery, and handover. Each carries its own condition and settles on its own verification outcome.
Deposits, reframed
Instead of asking for a deposit — which reads as risk transfer — make the first milestone small and quickly checkable. The client gets a real deliverable, you get a settled milestone early, and the relationship starts with a completed cycle rather than a favour.
Evidence for non-code work
Design, writing, research and advisory work evidence just as well as engineering, provided the condition names the artefact and its state.
- Weak
- "Deliver the brand work."
- Strong
- "Final logo files in the agreed formats delivered to the named shared folder, matching the approved direction from milestone one."
Common questions
Is this worth it for a small project?
The setup is one pass of writing down what you were going to deliver anyway. For a first engagement with a new overseas client, that pass is usually the cheapest insurance available.
Do I need a company to use it?
Covalt Work is built for individuals, contractors, agencies and service companies alike. The counterparty type is part of setting up the engagement.
How fast will I get paid?
No timing is estimated here. Settlement is reported when the record confirms payout has completed, and payout itself runs on regulated payment rails.
Propose a structured engagement
Draft the milestones and conditions, then invite your client to review the same wording you wrote.
