Payment protection for contractors, honestly described
Nobody can promise you will be paid. Structure can make non-payment hard to justify and impossible to obscure.
Contractors working across borders carry an asymmetry: the work is delivered first, and enforcement afterwards is expensive in any jurisdiction. Marketing language in this category tends to overreach in response, promising guarantees that no coordination platform can deliver.
Covalt Work does not guarantee your payment and does not hold your client's money. What it does is remove the ambiguity that non-payment usually hides behind.
What structure actually gives you
- Conditions before work
- You see and accept the exact completion test before starting, so "that's not what I meant" has a written answer.
- Evidence attached to the transaction
- Your evidence lives against the condition it satisfies, not in a thread that can be lost or reinterpreted.
- Bounded exposure
- Milestones are ordered and settle one at a time, so the amount you are ever owed at once is one milestone.
- An unrewritable record
- Claim, evidence, verification outcome and settlement result are recorded as they happened.
What it does not give you
It is not insurance, not escrow and not a payment guarantee. Covalt is non-custodial and never holds funds. If a client disappears, a record of a satisfied condition is strong evidence — it is not a payout.
You will also not see estimated payout dates here. Settlement is reported when the record confirms it, not predicted.
How to use it in your favour
Push back on conditions you cannot evidence, before accepting. Keep milestones small enough that a stall costs you weeks rather than months. Submit evidence against the specific condition rather than as a general update — vague submissions produce inconclusive outcomes.
Common questions
Is my money held somewhere safe until the work is done?
No — and any platform claiming that should be read carefully. Covalt is non-custodial and never holds funds. Payment runs on regulated rails; Covalt records the conditions and the outcome.
What if my client refuses to accept satisfied conditions?
Acceptance is not a matter of opinion on a written condition. Verification returns an outcome per condition, and that record exists independently of either party's later account.
Can a client change the conditions after I start?
Conditions on an accepted milestone are not open to unilateral change. New requirements belong in a new milestone with its own conditions and amount.
Ask your client for a work pact
Send them the structure: milestones, conditions and evidence sources agreed before the first line of work.
