International contractor payments that answer "what am I paying for?"

The hard part of paying a contractor overseas is not the transfer. It is deciding, defensibly, that the work is done.

Cross-border payment tooling has largely solved movement. You can send money to almost anywhere in minutes. What no transfer rail tells you is whether the thing you commissioned actually arrived — so the decision to release payment still rests on a judgement call made from a distance, on partial information.

Covalt Work sits before that decision instead of after it. The conditions that justify payment are written and accepted up front, evidence is submitted against those conditions, and the payment decision follows a verification outcome rather than an inbox.

The two questions a payment answers

Every contractor payment answers two separate questions, and most tooling only handles one of them.

Can the money reach them?
A payment rail question: country coverage, currency, fees, compliance. Solved, and not what Covalt does.
Should the money be released?
A transaction question: were the agreed conditions satisfied, and is there evidence to show it? This is what Covalt Work records and verifies.

What changes in practice

The contractor stops chasing, because the trigger for payment is written down and visible to them. The business stops guessing, because the acceptance decision points at evidence rather than at a feeling about the relationship.

Amounts stay proportionate as well. Because each milestone is its own transaction and milestones are ordered, the exposure at any moment is a single milestone rather than the whole engagement.

Writing conditions a contractor will accept

A condition is useful when someone with no history in the project can check it. Name the artefact, the location and the state it must be in.

Too vague
"Finish the integration and make sure it works."
Checkable
"Pull request #142 merged to main in the named repository, with the agreed test suite passing on that commit."

Common questions

Do you handle the payout itself?

Payout runs on regulated payment rails. Covalt is non-custodial and never holds the funds; it records the conditions, the evidence, the verification outcome and the settlement result.

Can the contractor see the conditions before agreeing?

Yes. The counterparty reviews the exact wording before the transaction becomes active, which is the point — conditions that arrive after work starts are not conditions, they are surprises.

What if a contractor works across several currencies?

Each engagement is denominated in one currency and each milestone is a transaction within it, so amounts and conditions stay unambiguous on both sides.

Is payment guaranteed once evidence is submitted?

No. Submitting evidence starts verification; it does not conclude it. Payment proceeds only when the verification outcome shows the conditions are satisfied.

Set up your first contractor milestone

Write the conditions, invite the contractor, and let the verified outcome drive the payment decision.
